What is Psychology?

Psychology is the scientific study of human experience. We learn about this discipline by examining the influence of biological, developmental, cognitive, emotional, and social aspects of our experience, and how these elements interact to affect our thought and behavior.Psychology's focus is usually on understanding individuals. However, it is inherently interdisciplinary in that it draws upon knowledge in the natural sciences, the Social Sciences, and Humanities.Studying psychology allows students to better understand their own experience and behavior as well as that of others. The KPC Psychology Department offers a range of courses designed to meet the needs of students from a variety of backgrounds and with varying degrees of interest in psychology.

Mission Statement

It is the mission of the psychology faculty at KPC to employ excellence in the generation, dissemination, and the application of psychological knowledge. We uphold academic standards reflective of respect for higher education and our students. We endorse the study and application of psychology to promote the welfare of all humans, and to improve the life experience on many different levels.

We invite students to join us in these honorable pursuits.

Careers in Psychology

If you are interested in pursuing a career in psychology, there are three general paths that might follow a four year degree in Psychology.

•  Psychology as a career: To call yourself a Psychologist , you must complete at least a Master's degree and normally a PhD in psychology. This applies both to research and/or teaching careers and becoming a practicing psychologist.

•  Careers in which psychology is relevant: Both knowledge base and skill sets acquired through the baccalaureate program provide preparation for a variety of careers.  The following is only a partial list of fields in which bachelors level graduates have employment.

Personnel

Labor Relations

Social Services

Gerontology

Technical Writing

Health Services

Corrections, Probation, Parole

Fundraising

Marketing and Public Relations

Mental Health

•  Careers built on psychology skills and knowledge: Psychology graduates also pursue careers in, for example, law, journalism and business. This often requires further study.

If you are interested in a career not directly related to psychology, you will most certainly make use of the many abilities and skills developed as a psychology student.
