Many Multicultural Events Planned for March - March is National Women's History Month! March 8, 1978 started the Women's History Week in Sonoma County, California. Some say that inspiration for this event came from a women's march in New York in 1857. Or it may have been to commemorate a strike by women needle trades workers in New York in 1908. The International Women's Day (March 8th) was revived in the 1960's and began being sponsored by the U.N. in 1975. Congress passed a resolution in 1981 making this week a struggle for equality, peace and development." Congress passed another resolution in 1987 that expanded the celebration for the month of March.Paramedic Associate of Applied Science at KPC - Rumors of a paramedic course at KPC may soon become fact. When Paul Perry accepted Scott Kraxberger's invitation to put together an EMT program at KPC, Dr. Wartinbee envisioned more. Dr. Wartinbee's vision will soon become a reality.St. Patrick's Day: Wear Green or Get Pinched - "Top of the morning to you!" If said with an Irish brogue it should help set the tone for what it means to be Irish on March 17, St. Patrick's Day. This is the day for remembering all things Irish; such as Leprechauns who have to give up their pot of gold if caught and the gift of gab for telling a yarn. Kissing the blarney stone hanging upside down to insure good luck and being able to sing "Danny Boy." Also wearing a Shamrock, the national flower, and St. Patrick himself, the patron saint of Ireland for converting them from paganism to Christianity.Famous Author Pam Houston Visits KPC - Who is Pam Houston? If you've been to KPC's Library or book store lately you're probably well aware. Pam Houston is a famous writer with many awards under her belt, such as the O Henry Award, and the Pushcart Prize. Her stories have also been selected for Best American Short Stories (1990, 1999), and The Best American Short Stories of the Century (1999).Women's History Paves Way for Brighter Women's Future - March is Women's History Month. Looking back at the accomplishments of famous women like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton helps women of today see the progress made by the efforts of their predecessors. However, it is even more important to look toward women's future. "You've come a long way baby" is true enough, but there's a long way yet to go before women will enjoy equal status in this country.Access to McLane 2nd Floor Still Up in Air - The planning for the construction of a skywalk or elevator is taking a back seat to the Ward building classroom expansion. With the cash in hand for the Ward project, the focus is now on that construction, says Philip Miller, KPC's Maintenance Director. KPC is still waiting to see if funding for a skywalk or elevator, which would provide disabled access to the upstairs faculty offices, will be approved by the state legislature.Arctic Winter Games One Year Away - During Spring Break next March, the Kenai Peninsula will host an international sporting and cultural event. The 19th Arctic Winter Games are expected to draw some 2000 contestants, 1200 special guests, and more than 3000 spectators from seven circumpolar countries, according to the Games' official website (www.awg2006.org).More news and events!Subscription Services Page - Request notification when a new issue of the KPC Connection is published, or send us your comments and suggestions via email. |
